Green tea and oral health

Green tea has been around for centuries and is believed to have multiple health benefits and healing properties. This tea was put to the test and has been found to have bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols and catechins, which are rich in antioxidants. Green tea has been scientifically proven to reduce the risk of heart disease, lower cholesterol, increase cognitive function and much more! New research has now discovered that not only is green tea great for your overall health but has many health benefits to your oral health too.

Green tea is brewed from the dried leaves of the camellia sinuses shrub. This is the same plant that is used to make black tea, however, green tea is made from un-oxidised leaves (the level of oxidation of the leaves, in fact, determines the type of tea). As green tea is unoxidised this means that it does not loose natural molecules and compounds through fermentation.

Green tea has been proven to effectively reduce plaque build up, control bacteria and lower the acidity of saliva! With these cavity-fighting properties, the antioxidants in green tea will help keep cavities at bay, as well as inhibit tooth decay.

As well as an antioxidant, green tea is also an anti-inflammatory. Studies have shown that those who drink green tea as part of their diet had healthier gums to those who didn’t. This, therefore, can reduce the risk of gingivitis and the more serious, periodontal disease, also known as gum disease.

Oral Cancer

Antioxidants are powerful! Green tea has been scientifically proven to protect against cellular damage and decrease cancerous tumour growths. In a recent study, patients suffering from precancerous lesions in their mouths were given green tea extract. The results showed that the progression of oral cancer had been inhibited. There is now research using tea compounds (which has proven to be successful in animals) where cancer cells have been destroyed or diminished through destroying the cancer cells mitochondria!

Also known as halitosis, is something that unfortunately we can all suffer from. The polyphenols found in this tea helps kill bacteria that can cause bad breath.
