Extraordinary power of a smile

THE  SCIENCE BEHIND SMILING

ARE WE SMILING BECAUSE WE ARE HAPPY?

OR

ARE WE HAPPY BECAUSE WE ARE SMILING?

We’re smiling because we’re happy…obviously? WRONG. Well, not totally wrong, as both statements are in fact, true. In the United Kingdom, we’re known for our stiff upper lip – one trip on the victoria line is enough evidence of this. We all seem to be wearing invisible blinders and our faces seem to demonstrate that gravity exists, so why so serious? We are so invisibly connected, we’re visibly disconnected, and it’s making us unhappy. When we smile, neurotransmitters, which use chemicals to transmit information to our bodies and brains, release hormones called endorphins. These endorphins are like a feel good party in our brains, and these endorphins make us feel happy.

This means smiling makes us feel happy, whether we’re happy or not…oh and we smile when we’re happy too.

But, it doesn’t just stop there, here are some extraordinary things that happen to you when you smile….

REDUCES STRESS AND ANXIETY

These endorphins not only make us feel happier but they can also reduce stress and anxiety by reducing the hormone cortisol.

Does the thought of going to the dentist make you feel stressed and anxious? Are you too scared to visit the dentist? Find out more about I.V. Sedation, commonly known as ‘sleep dentistry’.

BOOSTS PRODUCTIVITY AND CREATIVITY

Smiling has a way of changing your brain, or ‘training’ your brain. Being happier through smiling helps you be positive as well as change patterns in the brain. You know those people who are always so happy and positive, even when it’s all going wrong… Yeah, those are the people who ‘smile more’. Negativity creates problems without solutions, meaning, those who smile more, are happier, therefore think more positively, and positive thinking leads to higher productivity and creativity.

STRENGTHENS YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

In recent studies, there is supporting evidence that shows that smiling and laughter, can help promote white blood cells in the body. White blood cells help protect the body from illnesses.

MAKES YOU MORE ATTRACTIVE

This one is pretty simple; many people suffer from a miserable resting face. It happens to the best of us. We could be ‘quite’ happy, but our faces aren’t saying so. This makes us look grumpy, unapproachable, and a bit mean (even though were probably alright.) A smile suggests you’re more personable, welcoming, easy going as well as empathetic. All attractive qualities…

SUCCESSFUL

Smiling can be the key to success (with skills) there has been a lot of research in terms of relationships at work. Such as leadership and management, to body language and tone of voice.  Smiling has been proven as an effective leadership technique. I mean, when have you ever wanted to do something for someone when they’re giving you a death stare?

APPROACHABLE AND ENGAGING

If you look miserable, people are less likely to want to approach you or engage with you. A smile is an open as well as inviting facial expression, which shows you are interactive, maybe even willing to talk… face to face. GASPS*

TRUSTWORTHY

Smiling has been psychologically proven to help build trust. A genuine smile has been proven to increase your credibility.  So if you are a really great person, smiling helps you show that you are. Cute.

So there you have it, some great reasons to start smiling more!
