Bridges

Zirconia bridges

Zirconia bridge

Why should we replace missing teeth?

Your appearance is one reason. Another is that the gap left by a missing tooth can mean a greater strain on the teeth at either side. A gap can also mean your ‘bite’ is affected, because the teeth next to the space can lean into the gap and alter the way the upper and lower teeth bite together.

This can then lead to food getting packed in-between adjacent teeth and the gap, which causes both decay and gum disease.

Can I always have a bridge to replace missing teeth?

Almost, a bridge needs to be supported on strong healthy teeth on either side of a missing tooth space. If the teeth are strong, do not move and are healthy, they would be suitable to support a bridge. In some cases you have a space which does not have suitable teeth on either side of the space. In this instance a bridge would not be possible. Remember that in order for the bridge to be secured, the natural teeth will need to be reduced or prepared (in order to accept the bridge) This preparation or ‘reduction’ removes the protective enamel layer of teeth and can lead to other problems in the long term. If you are unsure it is best to ask your dentist, who will help you decide the best way of replacing your missing teeth.

How do I look after my bridge?

You need to clean your bridge every day, to prevent problems such as bad breath and gum disease. You also have to clean under the false tooth every day. Your dentist or hygienist will show you how to use a bridge needle or special floss, as a normal toothbrush cannot reach. Bridges have been shown to last for 10-15 years. In most cases bridges will fail not because of the actual bridge breaking or becoming damaged but usually due to the supporting teeth. The added strain on the supporting teeth can lead to secondary decay and periodontal problems

Are bridges expensive?

Although a bridge may seem expensive it can last 10-15 years. During normal function we exert great forces and strains on our teeth. Some materials which are used to make bridges for example Zirconia, porcelain or gold may have better lasting properties than other materials. The most common type of dental bridge is made of precious metal and porcelain. The precious metal is used to strengthen the bridge while the porcelain is covered on the outside for aesthetic purposes. The cost of precious metals have increased substantially during recent years and this has caused the cost of dental restorations to also increase in cost. Newer materials like zirconia and titanium may very well be used more frequently in future as a replacement for precious metals. It is important to remember that a bridge will improve your appearance and function.

What are bridges made of?

Bridges are usually made of a precious metal base. The precious metal base is then covered with tooth colored porcelain to look as similar to a natural tooth as possible. Newer materials like zirconia and titanium have become more popular recently with the increase in costs of precious metals. In addition to this, precious metals need to be cast ( a very labour intensive and technique sensitive process ) In some cases the casting is inaccurate and may cause the final bridge to not fit accurately on the natural teeth. Zirconia and titanium bridges are not cast and therefore will not deform during the casting process. Are there different types of bridge?

Yes, there are different types of bridge which use different fixing methods. Your dentist will choose the most effective and conservative bridge for your personal situation. The most common type of bridge is known as the fixed bridge. In this case 2 teeth on either side of the space are prepared to accept a bridge.

A Maryland bridge or cantilever bridges are other variations of bridges.
